Course was developed together with Wärtsilä and during this course he got involved with Project Management theory and Wärtsilä first time. After Jonas graduated he started to work in Wärtsilä Finland Oy as Project Controller in Project Management department. Career development lead into a “Manager, Project Controllers’ pool” position and at the same time he got more interested in project management related development topics. Jonas started as internal trainer in Power Plants’ own project management courses. These courses theory was based on PMBOK and during Jonas acted as trainer his knowledge rise fist.

Jonas got opportunity to work in Italy in customer delivery projects and there he spent 1,5 years as a shared role of project manager and site manager. He gained a lot of important information of the customer delivery projects that very based on the theory of PMBOK. When he returned back to Finland he started to work in Power Plants’ PMO as a Project Manager in development projects. Development projects where he is now involved in are cross-business development project where shared way of working, tools are developed.

Support from WPMO in project management related competencies

Jonas says that all in support to develop project management skills are all in all in good shape in Wärtsilä. He seems that maturity of project management skills is deepest in Power Plants unit because delivery projects have followed longer time in this business PMBOK way of working. After shared WPMO was established shared way of working across Wärtsilä Project Management positions has risen a lot! Support and offering of subject matter courses are high and all the time developed further. Wärtsilä’s professional Project Management Training and Certification Path ensures continuous development of Wärtsilä's project management competence. PMP®certified project managers and Wärtsilä project management methodology secure a reliable and predictable project performance.

Project Manager’s certifications in Wärtsilä

After Jonas returned back to Finland in 2008 he applied for a Project Management Professional (PMP) prep course. Course in 5 days long course that prepares PMP candidates for PMP exam. This course is arranged in Wärtsilä premises and ordered via WPMO. PMP prep course are usually arranged two times a year and seats in the course are divided amount different business units in order to spread the certificates around all units.

Life after PMP certification

Today Jonas sees that PMP certification is appreciated around the Wärtsilä but also external customers are interested of this. One reason for this is that shared theory base creates as well shared language and way of working. Jonas tells that PMP certification does not make you a perfect Project Manager but work needed after the certification makes. In order to keep certification valid certification holder is required to collect certain amount of Personal Development Units (PDUs) during three years time. PDUs can be gained via seminars, trainings, as acting a trainer him/herself, by reading books or so. But main thing is certainly that you apply learned skills into your normal daily work.
