Training & Certification path for PM/Wärtsilä PMO

The PMBOK is about project management on a general level. In order to be suitable for Wärtsilä’s needs, the trainings need to be made modified. The Professional Project Management training & Certification path at Wärtsilä Power Plants includes four levels; basic, intermediate, advanced, and expert level. (Interview with Sami Myllyviita, Director, PMO, Wärtsilä Finland Oy, Power Plants 7.3.2011)

For Project Managers, the first basic course offered is Project Management Fundamentals which is based on the PMBOK and provides basic training in project management. Other basic level trainings are business specific training concerned with Power Plants project management methodology. On an intermediate level is Wärtsilä’s Internal Certification PM@Wärtsilä, for people to understand Wärtsilä methodology. This training involves corporate best practices, and the application of Wärtsilä project management methodology. PMI´s project management certificates which are preferred in Wärtsilä are CAPM, PMP and PgMP. The recommended external certification for Project Managers is PMP by the PMI institute. For Project Controllers and Project Engineers the recommended external PMI institute certification is CAPM. Because of its high requirements, no one at Power Plants has yet attempted PMI institute’s PgMP certification. (Interview with Sami Myllyviita 7.3.2011)
